Libyan forces prepare a final attack to the fort ISIS

Tripoli (AFP) - Libyan pro-government forces on Sunday (7/8) said it will soon launch a final assault to retake the coastal city of Sirte from the hands of ISIS.

"Count down the final stages of military operations against Daesh already started," said forces loyal supporter of a national unity government based in Tripoli in a statement using ISIS names in Arabic.


"The leader of the operation held intensive meetings to prepare for the last and decisive battle to drive out gangs Daesh from the city of Sirte," they said in a statement quoted by AFP news agency.


A message on the Facebook page of their operations on Sunday showed pictures of uniformed men were watching a map of the city of Sirte, captured ISIS in June 2015.


The fighters allied to the Government of the National Agreement (Government of National Accord / GNA) supported the United Nations engaged in a fierce battle for weeks to seize Sirte, about 450 kilometers east of Tripoli.


Pro-GNA forces launched the operation in May and entered Sirte in June, but their progress slowed as ISIS responded with gunfire from snipers, suicide attacks and car bombs.


Since Thursday pro-government forces tried to reach the headquarters of ISIS in Ouagadougou conference center in the city.


United States since Monday have launched air strikes on ISIS positions in Sirte on request GNA.Six US air strikes on Saturday targeting ISIS positions, killing a sniper and damaged a vehicle according to the pro-GNA.


More than 300 were killed and 1,800 injured in the operation in Sirte according to medical sources in the city of Misrata, where the command center operations are based.
