Flood in Garut - INDONESIA: Dozens killed, scores missing persons

 

GARUT, INDONESIA - At least 16 people were killed and scores of others missing due to flash floods that hit Garut regency, West Java - Indonesia

This was disclosed by the Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), West Java, Haryadi Wargadikarta, told BBC Indonesia, Ging Gina.

 "The victim is feared could rise. But so far that has been found dead, 16 people. What is missing is still being recorded, also wounded," said Haryadi located in the disaster area.

 He added that affected about 500 families in seven districts.

On Wednesday (21/9), the water had receded. However, hundreds of volunteers and rescue workers and aid from various agencies continue to search for and rescue victims.

According Haryadi, flash floods caused by the rain that fell since Tuesday (20/9) in a high intensity and long duration, plus the high level of vulnerability of the soil.

"The flood occurred just before midnight, in the District Tarogong South, especially, in the watershed Cimanuk. So Cimanuk river water overflowed, directly hit the local neighborhood. The height of 1.5-2 meters. Much has to pass through the roof of the houses, said Haryadi

"Now is receding, thousands of previously displaced, mostly back to clean their homes are filled with mud, assisted by volunteers and officers of various agencies, haryadii added.

Besides in Garut, floods and landslides caused by heavy rains also occurred in neighboring Sumedang District.

It said residents must remain vigilant due to possible heavy rain back down.

In addition Cimanuk river, another river Cikamuri residing in the region, is also overflowing.

Elsewhere, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), landslide in the village Cimareme, Sumedang regency, West Java, on Tuesday (20/9) before midnight.

"Avalanche hoard two houses, and two people were found dead. Two others were still missing, feared buried by landslides," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman BNPB.
